Sugar:The Bitter Truth
You must find 90min where you can sit down at your computer and watch this video about sugar. You will think differently about everything you put into your mouth. Much of the video is easy to follow however there are portions that if you are not a nutritionist or have never taken anatomy and physiology you will be dazed but that is short lived in the speech. Mike Eustice is responsible for finding this video on you tube and sharing what he found will all of us at APEX. Thanks Mike. Enjoy.

No More Fructose!
Sucrose= High Fructose Corn Syrup
Sugar= poison
Sugar Free = PR's on all WOD's
uhhhhh im scared to eat now
Zim you definitely need to watch that diet. If you want to hang with Cody next time on Lt Fran you might wanna think about the next time you are consuming something that contains sugar.
Interesting stuff, sugar sure has become demonized...
HFCS have got a bad rap but are really not that much different, molecularly, then table sugar. It's just cheaper and has crept it's way into so many of the foods we eat. Well... not the foods WE eat but the vast majority of society anyway.
I think a small, "nomal" amount of fructose, like the amounts found in fruit are ok. Don't these help our bodies process glucose properly? I don't know about you guys but a pre-wod apple has definitely meant an extra zip in my step. Better choice than say an energy gel or muscle milk, no? I just think rather than saying NO SUGAR you just have to consider the source.
Teresa, your concerns are addressed in the video. HFCS isn't any different than sugar, that's exactly right. They're both equally bad.
From what I've researched (I'm no expert) and what he explains, it seems that the only two times it's ok to eat sugar is A: when it's fruit, since you're getting the fiber with the fruit and B. post-workout to replenish Glycogen stores.
I'm by nature a skeptical person so I don't want to jump on every health bandwagon either, (I'm not done determining if massive amounts of fish-oil is any more beneficial than moderate amounts) but this sugar stuff seems to pass my BS detector. I will not give up my pre-wod apple either :)

Right on Eustice. HFCS is cheaper and is also sweeter than regular table sugar. Makes foods taste even better. In the video Lustig rates the sweetness of sugars. Sucrose(table sugar) is ranked as a 100, HFCS is 120.
Also in the video he states that "God created Fiber as the antioxidant to Fructose found in fruits". No Fiber No good. Fiber has been taken out of many foods because without fiber food can be stored longer and shipped to larger distances without spoiling. Food with less Fiber can also be prepared much quicker. All fast food restaurant foods are extremely limited in Fiber. The most amount of fiber in any food at a FF restaurant is 1 gram.
Great video Eustice! Extremely interesting and more people should be aware of it.
As for the fruit topic - Loren Cordain author of the Paleo Diet and whom Robb Wolf studied under says for athletes fruit can be consumed without liimits (I'm guessing he means more professional type athletes but I'm sure typical cf-ers could fall somewhere between). But for someone trying to lose weight they should cut back on the fruit and keep it to berries (bc of their low sugar content).
Also Eustice I'll leave my copy of the Paleo Solution at apex so you can pick it up whenever you come in.
A good explanation of insulin and fat storage:

Great stuff, I love it!!! Yeah don't worry that pre wod apple is still on the table :) I'm with you T.
Eustice, good call with the fish oil thing, not EVERYONE should be on massive amounts of fish oil, it depends on your "condition" or your "conditioning levels", another thing to consider is your live. Some people have a harder time processing all of that if their liver is "congested". I talked with my nutritionist about this and he told me if there were athletes of mine who were curious if they had a congested liver he would check you and then give you the whole food supplement to help clean it up. If anyone is interested talk to me more or shoot me an email.
Dan, sweet, I love that clip GREAT explanation and cute too :)
Now I'm about to say something that may bring a smile to all you sweet tooth's out there...what about the cheat meal PR? You're eating clean and then have a cheat meal and feel BETTER in your WOD and PR or maybe even a hung over PR..ever happen to you?...been there, it's how I got my best Grace score ever. What do you guys think about this? What are your theories and what does your food research and knowledge lead you to believe??? Any guesses...
Oh and I think I smell a no sugar challenge coming...

My hypothesis on PR's during crappy-feeling moments:
Your mind is not expecting anything special so you're not stressed about letting yourself down, which ends up being a great strength. Then, halfway through the workout you realize, 'holy crap I'm on a good pace! That's it, I'm going after this thing.'
It's like seeing a movie everyone told you is terrible, so you're bracing for the worst. Then you end up liking it. It's all about what mental state you're in.
~Eustice
I'm enjoying this little health forum we have going here =)
I agree with Eustice, your mental state is a huge part in exercising and competing especially with something as taxing as a cf WOD. An example can be with watching me life heavy if i do my normal complaining and doubt myself i do terrible that day.
I think another aspect is involving the nutrition side, especially with a paleo type lifestyle. Because a paleo diet tends to be more of a "low-carb", when we get those extra carbs in us (even if they are not the best) from these cheat meals its like extra boost (you can think of it like the movie the fast and the furious when the cars spray nos into the engines). Maybe more carbs (healthy ones) can be added to the diet like sweet potatoes and fruit if this occurs.
That response was from Dan J by the way
ooh a carb-Nox boost analogy! I like it. You wouldn't want to run your engine on that all the time, but every now and then for a bit of fun isn't so bad.
Eustice
Great analogy DanPage :) and Eustice I do agree there is a mental part about it for sure, or even you think it's going to be crappy so you're expecting it to hurt and expecting a fight and you surprise yourself. So many times people come in saying they felt great before the wod but then they just "don't know what happened" I think their brain happened...and they were expecting the wod to not hurt so bad.
Like Dan said the extra carbs and cheat meal carbs are so readily available to use (our glycogen stores are super high and SO ready to be used as fuel that you get what I call "cheat meal muscles and lungs". Now this can turn out very bad for wods that are your weakness, however if it's a wod you are decent at and not too long in duration you may be able to feel this.
