30-Day (kinda) FOOD Challenge

We had a great food chat this morning and so what better time than now to start a food challenge. Its "kinda" a 30 day challenge because the best time to do a food challenge is right before the holidays, but it's really important to make sure you HAVE 30 days before a holiday to start it.....soooo WE START TOMORROW! 30 days from tomorrow puts us exactly on Thanksgiving day, so this is more like a 29 day challenge.
Here are the rules....
1. You Choose the challenge, have you been at odds with a specific food group lately? Or has that sweet tooth been winning the fight recently? Or maybe you've always wanted to see if you could go "caffeine free" for a month...here's your chance!
You get to pick what you want to give up for the next 30 days...my suggestion would be SUGAR as #1, then breads/pastas/grains as #2 and then dairy or alcohol as #3. (that's just my opinion). There are many things you can choose, but it should be something that you know will be a challenge for you.
2. Choose your Level...Gold or Silver Sneaker. If you go Gold that means you will refrain from the chosen "food" for all 30 days. If you go Silver Sneaker and you have a special occasion that you already have planned (ie: vacation, "girl/guys night out", or early holiday get-together) you can still play but you must pay for your cheat if you choose to do so by doing an exercise consequence (TBD).
Please share your event date(s) in advance.
3. Be Accountable and post your goals and consequences to comments below. We will have weekly posts where you can check in and give us your update AND as always please comment under the daily wod so we can keep eachother going strong!
Let's have some fun with this and look forward to a great next 30 days!
**Also in comments please weigh in on what you think the exercise consequence should be for our Silver Sneakers.

AHH this is so exciting! I thought of some consequences( since I love them):
*For either every bad food you eat or every calorie of that food you consume you must:
-do that amount in burpees with a vest on
-carry that weight overhead 400m
-sled pull that weight 400m
-pull up that weight
(hardcore example :if I eat 1 serving of ice cream, 160 calories, I have to sled pull 160lbs, or do 160 burpees with a vest on)
Or:
-bear crawl 400m, 4 rounds
-broad jump 1 mile, top of every minute, 5 burpees
Just some suggestions! Good luck everyone :)
We've created a monster!
Really.....4rds of 400 m bear crawl!
What about the burpee Mile or for Larynn- burpee 2 mile
I'm in...going with no sugar...not sure what what sneaker is going to fit?
This should be interesting. Going to give up alcohol at the gold level.
I like the sled pull idea with but instead of weights I'll pull a keg of Guinness while doing shots of Jameson at every 100 meters!
I'll throw in sugar as well.
OR
5000 DU 5 rounds
OR
cartwheel uphill with a vest on 3 rds
OR....
LOL LaRynn you are awesome!
I am going to start the gold (no sugar, no grain, no dairy, no alcohol)on Tues the 1st only because I don't want to throw food away and I know I need a 100% clean kitchen in order to do this. I'm excited to feel awesome again! Great info this AM!! Thanks Tanya!
Haha cartwheel uphill! That's awesome! Or wheelbarrow someone uphill and carry them down..with a vest on haha :)
I'm trying to sugar, grains, dairy, or processed foods!!
I'm going with Sugar. And I'm going with Silver Sneaker. I am going to be in the car for 10 hours on Nov. 11th, so because food choices on the road are pretty crappy, I will probably pack Cliff bars to eat which does have sugar in it.
This challenge will give me the boost I need to get away from sugar. When I think about it, I still have a lot of sugar in my diet, so this will be pretty awesome for me.
Consequences should be 50 burpees for every "cheat". So, if you have one food that has sugar in it, you do 50 burpees, etc...
I do like the idea of a 400 m bear crawl, but maybe just 1 round. LOL!
Do the WOD after your cheat day with a weight vest on. (even when everyone else is doing it without the vest.)
Perfect timing for this! I've totally been in a nutrition rut. I'm going for gold with no sugar and no grains.
Consequence...maybe to take a walk in the pet cemetary--I mean, tall grass out back?
Larynn- you are a maniac! Love it!
I'd like to try going for the gold (no sugar or grains) BUT I am going to need a serious support system to help with "dessert" recipes. Or maybe I'll just go to Teresa's for dinner every night!
Think we could organize a recipe exchange at the box? If everyone wants to bring some in or e-mail them to me, I'll volunteer to type them all up....thoughts??
Oh, and in all seriousness....my consequence would be to run a 5k with a weight vest on...or carrying Kutty?!?
Ok, dare I say my goal is to give up caffeine at the gold level. Considering I spend almost as much time at Starbucks as I do Apex, this is a hefty goal for me. Kutty knows how much I love my froth.
Kacie, you are invited for dinner anytime! You just might have to do an appetizer wod to earn your supper. Then I'll feed you something without sugar, grains, caffeine, alcohol and dairy and it might still have flavor.
Consequence should be to bring a sledge over to our house and help Wes split and stack the 450 piles of wood I am tired of looking at.
I love a good nutrition challenge, this is fun!
OK so I definetly want go for the GOLD sneaker, giving up sugar/breads/dairy! Have been trying to get a strict 30 days for a while now, so hopefully this will be the push I need! :)
I like the burpee consequence with a weight vest on. 50 for every cheat food!
I'm thinking of splitting this one....
gold - no caffeine
*silver - no grains, no sugar
*one "planned" cheat day - this Sunday(I have a date with sweet freedom's fall menu) :)
Kacie... Here is a great Paleo Friendly dessert
Berry Good Cobbler
3 Cups fresh or frozen berries (blueberries worked for us)
1 egg
1 1/2 cups almond meal
2 tbl coconut oil
2 tbl cinamon
Drizzle of organic/raw honey
Unsweetened coconut milk
Pre-heat oven to 350
Pour berries into a pie pan
In a small bowl, mix egg, almond meal and coconut oil then shake in cinnamon. Stir well until it gets crubly.. If you wish drizzle the honey on top.
By hand evenly crumble the almond meal on top of the berries
Bake for 35 minutes.
Serve in bowls with cold coconut milk poured on top.
This was super delish!!!!
I haven't tried this, but it looks sooooo good.
Baked Apples
3 Granny Smith Apples
1/3 cup pecans/chopped
1/4 cup finely shredded unsweetend coconut
1/4 cup raisens or dried cranberries
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
2 tbl coconut oil
preheat oven to 350
Carefully remove the core of the apple.
Mix all other ingredients together in a bowl. Then stuff in the "empty core" of the apples
Bake apples in a glass baking dish for 40 minutes or until the apples are tender.
I am in Silver for the sugar. I have to prectice my apple pie before the real deal. Is agave nectar/ honey ok?
KACIE - I am all for the recipe exchange.
JULIE - having survived 3 years of travel ... banana chips, homemade trail mix, apples, larabars, protein shakes, & beef jerky kept my road trips paleo.
LaRynn - your suggestions are totaly NUTZ!! holy cow girl. love the energy though.
These recipe's will make you feel like you are cheating.....
recipe's are courtesy of Everyday Paleo by Sarah Fragoso.
so if you have that book, check out the other recipe's in the back. :)
Ok so what about this little nugget....anyone cheats and EVERYONE has to do the exercise consequence/LaRynn creation. Whatta ya think? I know this would hold me even more accountable knowing I wouldn't be the only one running a 5k on my hands while wearing a weight vest balancing Kutty on my feet!
Oh and Teresa what time is dinner? Can we come too? :)
Seriously, a RECIPE swap NEEDs to happen. I love it, thanks for already sending them Julia! Feel free to post electronically here or in daily WOD comments or bring in a hard copy at the gym and our scribe Kacie will post them.
I Love all the enthusiam! This is awesome. I am so stoked I am almost thinking of adding NO Dairy (my morning cream in my coffee) to my NO SUGAR and NO GRAINS Gold Level....I said "almost"...went black this morning...will have to get back to ya'll on that!
Katy,
The decision is up to you as to what SUGAR you're giving up. if honey and agave are getting out of control and your pouring them on everything than it probably should count for sure.
If you want to say no sugar means no sweetner (natural or refined) in top 3 ingredients that works too.
Or NOTHING no honey no agave no Evap Cane Juice NOTHING! That's wonderful!
There are so many people at different stages in the game, that you make the call where you need to give up.
Anyone out there living off fruity pebbles and coke I would love for you to give it all up and just use honey as your only source of sweet for the next 30 days :)
As for you paleo buffs out there (Katy :) maybe it's something else like giving up dried fruit if that's become an overwhelming majority of your carbs, you choose.
Ok--LaRynn--calm down there sister!! LOL I like gung-ho, but holy crap!
I think I will continue with what I just started last Wednesday...no dairy, no sugar, no grains...GOLD level...Dairy is definitely the hardest thing for me to give up...I love my string cheese and chobani!!
Tanya--unsweetened vanilla almond milk is what I have been using in my tea/coffee and smoothies...it's delish! (on sale at Giant this week 2/$4 in the organic aisle--not the refrigerated)
Also, of course you had to dial it up a notch with everyone doing consequences if someone cheats!! LOL
I think wall climbs have to be a consequence somehow...ugh, could you imagine doing those with a weight vest???
I will take deserts for silver. will keep alcohol and sugar in my coffee though. --scratch
I am in!
Glass Slipper: I am giving up: Protiens, Good Carbs & Fats
Gonna try and stick to a gluetin, sugar and starch diet.
I'm going to need a lot of support with this. So please AMRAP the encouragement
Thanks!
LOL Bus, you can be the controlled variable and do it in the name of science.
I am coincidentally in the nutrition chapter of my Personal Wellness class and what do you know....."The Food Plate" I posted "The Bitter Truth" video on the class discussion board and the teacher removed it with no explanation. I have to go along with this bullshit to get a good grade; it's ridiculous.
LOL Keith!! Good luck with that! does beer count as a carb?
how about this as an almost cheat--I was putting something together for the kids' fall parties and I tossed a single m-n-m in my mouth then realizing what i just did, before I bit down on it...I SPIT IT OUT!! who does that? ONE tiny m-n-m...LOL
Bus that is freakin hilarious. Shanna I am ashamed to hear that about your class. I get so upset when I see everyone out there who still just don't understand or just don't get it. In the middle of my hallway at school the business class is selling capri suns, muffins, bagels, and candy. Shanna have you tried to have a one on one with your teacher? That is very frustrating to hear a wellness teacher teaching such content. Is your teacher open to suggestions or new ideas when it comes to food?
On a second note I will be going for the silver sneakers starting Nov 1. I will be avoiding at all cost grains, sugar (top 3 ingredients) and alcohol. Dairy I will not do away with I need my slice of cheese on my eggs in the am and protein shake with milk.
LaRynn started off 3rd day in giving into a consequence already for cheating. I think GI Janes seem to be the consequence for a cheat. 50 to be exact per cheat. Game on.
Sharon that's hysterical! I could picture you doing it....I've been there, the old oops what did I just do? I like that you didn't bite, I'm pretty sure when I did this in a past challenge I bit and then swooshed my mouth out with water!
And LaRynn only gets one more strike then she's out of the challenge....she LIKES consequences (if you didn't notice her crazy schemes) and to already have a brownie, snickerdoodle, and whatever else cheat on day 2 she needed more push not to cheat :) So I told her she gets one more oops and then after that...game over! Love ya LaRynn hope this helps! :) PUT DOWN THE SNICKERDOODLE!
Haha no more sweets for me I promise! Its just not even an option!! I'm really trying hard to stay on this now :) and I'll pick up some mixes at work and bring in to share!
Anyone else feel like they are detoxing? Not just withdrawl... But detox? I have a low grade fever, and my stomach feels wonky. I don't feel sick though, just a little sluggish.
Anyway... Day 3 was the hardest yet to get through. Going through cabinets for acceptable food about - I don't know - 100x yesturday. I finally settled on a fruit smoothie with almond butter, almond milk, and protien powder. Old habits suck.
And.... I lost 5 lbs. (crazy right?) I have changed to go gluten free about a week ago, so that may play a part in the weight loss, but the no sugar really speed up the progress. I know there is a safe amount to lose each week, so I'll keep an eye on it, but was surprised this morning getting on the scale.
Tanya - I'm glad you are enjoying the blueberry desert! :) I'll definately have to make some tonight with all this snow. ;) But fondue just isn't the same with coconut milk. LOL!
Keep up the good work LaRynn, keeping it real. No more cheats! I really do think we should institute the rule that when 1 cheats, we all do consequences. That thought has been keeping me really honest.
Natural Sugar Free/Dairy Free find of the day. - Whole Foods has Coconut Ice-cream that is sugar free with no "lab produced" substitute. The mint chocolate chip has stevia in it, but the chocolate, we couldn't find any sugar substitute. (and bonus, it tasted delish)
Had to let you all know. - Hopefully, I'm not going too overboard with all my posts. Just excited about the challenge.
Just made almond milk and it surprisingly worked tastes GREAT! I did sweeten it with alittleee honey though and added some vanilla bean to give it a milk flavoring. So awesome! I also got that coconut milk ice cream and it tastes great too :)
